Fourth of July In Flagstaff!

Is there anything that's more summer-y than the Fourth of July? I think not. This weekend Americans across the nation are pulling out all their reds whites and blues, slurping down juicy bites of watermelon and enoying dad's grilled perfection.

Here's a few PJ picks for the holiday weekend. :)

Happenings
As far as festivities go, Flagstaff is the place to be in the summer, especially on the fourth. Thousands make their way downtown to celebrate with Flagstaff's Annual Fourth of July Parade. This year (The 15th annual!) there's more than one hundred entries in the parade that Governor Janet Napolitano has deemed an "Arizona Treasure."

Even before the Fourth arrives there's a whole weekend of activities Friday kicks off the weekend with Movies on the Square and First Friday's Art Walk. you can get a deeper appreciation for our country's history at the Pioneer Museum where there will be Civil War artillery demonstrations. Also The Arizona National Guard’s outstanding 108th Army Band will be featured in concert at the museum at Fort Tuthill on the evening of the Fourth.

And there's so many more fun, free, family events! Check out this site for more events and details!

Day Trip!

Happy Tuesday Loves! ....and Happy Solstice!

With June over halfway gone, things are warming up around here, so I know things are seriously heating up down in the valley of the sun. Can we say....DAY TRIP!?

Time to high-tail it outta there and head for a beautiful land that's thousands of feet higher and lots of degrees cooler. So listen to your spontaneity, hop on the I-17 and soon enough you'll be rolling your windows down and breathin' in the fresh mountain air.

But what's there to do with just one day in Flagstaff? LOTS! But here's my version of a perfect day trip in Flag.

First: Get your hike on! A little adventure outdoors is just what a day trip calls for! One of my absolute favorites (and somewhat of a local secret) is the Lava Tubes. Be sure to bring flashlights and sweatshirts. It's pitch black and cooooold down there. You'll feel like Indiana Jones the whole time.

Once you've victoriously emerged from the lava tubes, have a picnic in a nearby meadow. Really anywhere off the dirt road to the lava tubes will be gorgeous. Snack on whatever deliciousness you've brought from home. (But don't go too crazy..you're going somewhere yummy for dinner!)

So now it's late afternoon and you're making your way back towards town. By now you're either ravenous for dinner, or wanting to keep it light and refreshing after a beautiful day of activity. Either way you've got options. Both MIX and Diablo Burger are two of my favorites and and are conveniently attached to the Old Town Shops in the heart of down town Flag. Opt for the patio seating, which are both nestled in the corner of Heritage square (jackpot for sunshine enjoyent and people watching.)

After Dinner, walk it off as you stroll around the Old Town Shops and other shops in the vicinity. There's a plethera of new summer apparel at PJ, so it's the perfect time to stop in and snag that dress that no one in Phoenix has. ;)

The sun is closer here! Wear a big 'ole sun hat and lots of sunscreen. Just got all these in! So many to choose from! (Plus naked bee sunscreen is on it's way this week!)

On the way home, if you're leaving before dark and you live on the east side of the valley (Fountain Hills, Mesa, Gilbert, etc.) take the scenic route. Lake Mary Road to Highway 87 is a beautiful drive and cuts out all of the freeway mumbo jumbo. And if you're a central Phoenician or live in the west valley, it's the I-17 for you, which is okay too, because you can stop at Rock Springs for some pecan pie! YUM.

Now doesn't that sound like a lovely day? Do yourself a favor and put together two hours of your favorite driving music and get your booty up here!

Mix Flagstaff!

Hey ya'll!

So...has anyone been into the Old Town Shops lately...? If not, you're in for a surprise. A very delicious surprise! Last week, the mystery construction project was revealed in a big way!

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm proud to introduce the newest edition to our building, MIX Flagstaff!
With it's beautiful open layout, you can stroll on in from Heritage Square.

So here's the concept: They serve egg scrambles at breakfast, and salads, soups and sandwiches at lunch and dinner.

The great thing about this place is that you've got options! You can pick your "mix" of ingredients and create your own culinary masterpiece, or if that's too overwhelming for you, there's plenty of salads and sandwiches that have been created to take the brain work out for you!

Ten Tips from a College Grad to a High School Grad

Along with some words of affirmation from Curly Girl

Hello All! Hope this post finds everyone on a sunny and optimistic Tuesday morning!
Last week we chatted about summer's arrival and our ushering in this balmy and beautiful season with soap! At the end of this week, for Flagstaff high school grads, summer isn't approaching...IT'S HERE.

From all the girls at P.J. Chilcottage to all of you grads, we would like to extend the most joyous of CONGRATULATIONS!!! We know you've worked your little tushes off and are so proud of you!

All of us girls have been in your shoes and know that this can be an exciting but overwhelming time. As a recent college grad from NAU, I've walked in your shoes and am delighted to share a few words of wisdom that will (hopefully) help you enjoy the next four years to the full!

1. Make new friends, but keep the old.

One is silver and the other's gold!--(How many of you

just sang that with me?) Maybe you're rooming with your best bud or you have some high school friends to lean on during this transition--great! My advice is to bring some new faces into your crowd. Allow yourself to branch and find new friends. The friends you make now will

impact your life in awesome ways...if you let yourself make 'em.

2. Cook with new friends!

When new relationships are formed...nurture them! How? FOOD of course! Cook together. Designate a special night of the week for dinners. Pool your money, shop together, put on your favorite jams and eat and eat! (There's nothing more comforting than a homemade meal.)

3. Take a PE class for credit.

This one seems appropriate to follow the community cooking tip. ;-) Seriously. DO THIS. If you're like me and have absolutely no self discipline, the required attendance will give you the motivation you can't muster on your own. Plus they're fun and stress relieving. Try Zumba. The rhythm WILL get you!

4. Take your time finding your major.

You're paying good money for this degree! Make it one you LOVE. If you're undecided, don't force it. Try your hand at a variety of different entry level courses. You might find a passion you never knew you had.

5. Get a job.

I know. Being a student is your job. But sooner or later it's time to put the big girl pants on. Even if you work just a few hours between classes, you'll have fun money for the weekends with all your new friends, meet new people, and learn valuable life skills.

6. Explore your new habitat!

Go adventuring! Try the restaurants, window shop downtown, jog the urban trails, bike through neighborhoods. Becoming a part of the community outside campus will slowly help you adjust and feel more like a local.

7. Get a bike and ride it.

Even if you need to thrift one and tune it up, this is a worthy investment. It'll become your best friend. So name it, put bike bells and streamers on it, and cruise away. It'll cut walking and town traffic time in half all while toning your glutes and quads. Um, yes please.

8. Cozy up the joint!

For us nesters this one goes without saying, but home should be your safe place of refuge. Decorate it with things that make you happy. De-dungeon your dorm with pillows, blankies, wall art, and lots of photos.

9. Call your mama!

I'm not sure how, but moving out often magically transforms mom into this whole other person. She the first person you call after a tough exam, and you know whatever she says is going to be wise and comforting. Tell her you appreciate her. Savor her home cooked meals this summer, and program her as your #1 speed dial.

10. Know that it's going be hard, but it's going

to get better.

Honestly, there's no formula to having the perfect Freshman year. Leaving home and all you know is hard, but take joy in the little things and keep pressing forward. Every semester gets a little easier, and you start to feel more and more like the person you're going to be. Take curly girl's advice, get a really cute helmet and spoil yourself with a manicure.

Congrats class of 2011.

Girls' Night Out!

GIRLS' NIGHT OUT!

Welp, it's June kids! School's are ringing their last bells, sweaters and boots are hibernating under beds and in the dark corners of our closets. Dare I say...it's starting to feel like Flagstaff's favorite season...SUMMER!

And last night, summer smelled like (what else?) SOAP!..And lots of it.
At P.J. Chilcottage, soap seems to be the glue that holds us all together. Honest to goodness it's the one item in our store that EVERYONE loves, guaranteed. So..twice a year we have a blast inviting anyone and everyone to make two bars of their very own, all for a low price of...FREE!

So here's how it works:
Everyone gets two soap bar molds from one of these lovely ladies..

Then, you pick out whatever shapes strike your fancy!

Maybe your soap reflects your sweet tooth...YUM.

Whatever you're into, we've got shapes: surf boards, soccerballs, high heels, cacti, monkeys, you name it. :)

Every year we have guests that really break the mold and get creative.
Including a rainbow soap made from chopping up different colored shapes.
Cool, right? ...Why didn't I think of that?

The creative process can take quite a while. (A great way to keep little hands busy.)

Once you have it JUST right, you'll pay a visit to these darling girls and get a steaming hot cup of melted clear glycerin. The scents of choice for last night were lemonade (like grandma made) and vanilla.

Just pour and let it cool while you shop fresh sales!

And if soap's not the glue that holds us all together, then food certainly is! And we had a very special treat last night of sampling from MIX, a new restaurant to be opening in our building very soon!

The spread included pecan turnovers, pastrami baked turkey, salmon and caper spread, and herb & pumpernickel focachia bread. A HUGE step up from our usual store bought spread.

All in all, we had an absolute blast hosting all of you that came out last night! If you missed it, shame on you and you'd better come to the next one! (You can keep yourself in the know via our facebook page!)

Bike to Work Week 2011

Welp....Would you believe it's been a whole year since Bike to Work Week 2010?

For many of us Flagstaffers, this

week rekindles our long lost relationships with our bikes.

Some of us...(you know who you are) need to apologize to our bikes for the neglect, pamper them with a tune up and some fun new frills and kick off the summer of smooth sailing.

If free fun, food, entertainment, (and exercise) are your thing. This weeks events are right up your alley...or bike lane.

Here's the line up:

Wednesday: Bike to Breakfast day (free breakfast stops from 6:30-9am)

Thursday: Bike to School Day, Bike in movie at Foxboro Park starting at 7:30. (serving free hot chocolate and desserts)

Friday: Bike to Beer, New Belgium Cruiser Raffle at the Green Room. (5-7pm--winner will be picked at 6:30pm)

Mother's Day Gift Basket Winners

MOTHER'S DAY GIFT BASKET WINNERS

The PJ girls had a wonderful time reading stories that made us laugh, cry & stories that warmed our hearts.
It was a pleasure to get to know the authors, as well as the mother's that played a lead role in not only those stories, but in the lives of the authors.
Your stories were inspirational and encouraging!

So here are the three contest winners!
There are pictures of the award winning mothers, the stories that were submitted, and the baskets that each mother won!

Michelle

A lot of moms are good, a lot of them are great, but there is only one “best mom.” This mom, is our mom, Michelle. Over this past year, my mom was wonderful because she pours out her heart and soul into other people, not just her family, but people in need. She starts every day thinking of how she can help someone else. She is a great mom, who does those little things. For example, she will take us out to breakfast, lunch, and dinner, even ice cream. Just out of the goodness in her heart, she’ll arrange for a friend to come over. She also packs us healthy lunches. She takes us on interesting trips, to places like Disneyland, Flagstaff, San Diego, San Francisco, Boston, and New Orleans. She will always tell us bedtime stories, and will come to class projects. She also comes to sports games and even plays with us, and barely has any time to do anything for herself, but she is still happy giving to us, and to others.

But two things changed her, and our entire family’s, life. She was diagnosed with breast cancer. She lost her hair from chemotherapy, had trouble moving around, and was laid up in bed from sheer fatigue ninety percent of the time. Then, the day of before a chemo treatment, my little brother was diagnosed with type one diabetes. She didn’t know what to do and had nobody to help. For our entire family, it seemed like the world was coming to an end. But our mom stood up, during cancer treatment, and brought our family back together. She did this by showing her mother’s love and grace. When our family was united again, she started working a job, traveling to California every two weeks, just to support us and the things we enjoy. She also started a foundation, called A Mother’s Grace, (facebook page = mothers grace) which helps moms around the world that are trying to unite communities such as hurricane Katrina relief in New Orleans or African refugees here in Arizona or Moms with horrible illness. One of the many reasons she pours out her heart to families like this is because she wants to help mothers that are trying to unite a community, small or big, like she did with our family. Our mom is, by far the most amazing mom in the world.

During the past year, my mom has been wonderful because she has given me more strength then I could ever ask for. I love her so much. My sophomore year of high school she was diagnosed with breast cancer. I felt my world crashing all around me. Slowly, she recovered. My freshman year was hard leaving her and the fear of cancer returning while I was gone. One day when I walked downtown, taking a break from studying, I walked into P.J. Chilcottage and loved that they had breast cancer items. I bought my mom like three things including a shirt that she wears when we go on our dates back home. It showed me that other people care too. Then beginning of my sophomore year of college, my worst fear came... her breast cancer came back and with a friend, ovary cancer. I felt like I couldn't go to school, I needed to be with all 24-7. She made me come back to school. She said that she was too stubborn for them to take her yet. Everyday I was worried, everyday I feared that I would get a call that God had sent for my mom. Going to Rely for Life this year made me really grateful that she is still here and seeing other students who lost a parent. It made me see that I need to cherish the time I have with her because one day when those people stand up for honoring their parents, I could be standing there with them. For now however, she is here and is here for me.
Another thing that makes my mom wonderful is that she is always there for me. It’s weird to hear people say that they are friends with their parents, but I can truthfully say my mom has become on of my closest friends. I would say that we have become even closer in the past two years with me being away at college then we ever were. I tell her everything. From boy problems to school to parties to sorority stuff, she hears it all. My mom always seems to know what to say when I am down. I remember when I was feeling down and she sent me a package filled with chocolate, sour patch, gummy bears, etc. In the package she wrote a note that said: "Pooh Bear, sometimes you just need to veg out and forget about the world. Hope you feel better soon. Remember, this will just make you stronger! When you get home we will go on a coffee date. Love mom." I love my mom so much, I can't put words to how much I do. She has always been there for me and she always will be until God needs her. I am hoping that is not for a very long time because I don't know what I would do without her. she truly is a special, one of a kind mom and I'm thankful to have her as my mom :) I know if others knew our relationship that we share, they would be jealous.

By now, I hope you can see why my mom is so wonderful. Thank you for taking your time and getting to know her. I have included some pictures of me and my mom. Enjoy! :)

My mom story is actually not about my mom at all. It is about my daughter.

In October of 2009, she found out she was pregnant. Unmarried and entering drug rehabilitation, she knew the best thing for her baby was adoption. Though many of her former high school classmates were having babies as single moms, she knew she wanted better for her child.

She went through rehab and spent the next 7 months preparing to have a child that would never know her as, “Mom”. She went through adoption counseling, and picked out parents for her son.

On June 20th (Father’s Day last year), she gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, Malachi William. The adoptive parents were there, and the adoptive mom and I coached her through the last hour of pushing.

I am so proud of my daughter. She made a very difficult decision and gave her child a chance at life and a 2-parent home. It was far from easy, but, because the adoption is an open one, she gets to see him on a fairly regular basis. However, sometimes when she comes home from a visit with him, her heart is sad because she knows she will never be able to hear him say to her, “Mommy, look at me!”, with her being the one he is talking to.

She loves his adoptive parents and they are more than we could have hoped for. They are very good to her and us, his grandparents. We have the best possible outcome for the circumstances, but it’s still hard on her. He’s now 10 mos old and getting cuter every day! On April 30th, we’ll be going to a luncheon to honor birth-mothers for Mother’s Day. I will be so proud to sit next to her as she shares with other birth moms the photos of her beautiful child, a gift from God for all of us. Oh, did I forget to mention that she was adopted by us...?

He was our guest this weekend here in Flagstaff.
He spent the weekend showering us with gifts of lovely white snow.

But here in Flagstaff, we love winter!

The reason why is because we know how to use the cold for our own benefit.

Breast Cancer Awareness Update

Breast Cancer Awareness Update

As of 4:20pm on Thursday afternoon, October 21,
P.J. Chilcottage has raised
$1,471.43!

That means we are only
$28.57
away from our original goal of $1,500!

We now have a new goal of raising
$2,000
by the end of October!

We are overwhelmed by everyone's excitement, generosity & care for the cure!

If you haven't donated yet, and would like to, there are

The money that is being raised here at PJ is going to Northern Arizona Breast Cancer Center, and will be used to help local uninsured or under-insured women pay for treatment!

Breast Cancer has touched and affected the lives of almost every individual, whether experiencing it first hand, knowing someone personally, or knowing of somebody.

The PJ girls' hearts are invested as well.

PJ girl, Alissa G's grandmother, aka "Bubby", Rose Greenberg, and her twin Ruth Baron are some of the oldest breast cancer survivor twins in the country!
Twins Rose & Ruth live in Florida, and as of 2008 were the oldest surviving twins in the sunshine state!

Field Trip to the Primal Elements Soap Factory

How does our Primal Elements soap become soap?
Ever curious about how this happens?

Well, we were!

So, Lisa took a trip to Huntington Beach, CA to see the Primal Elements factory and find out for herself!

What did she find out?
It starts with vegetable glycerin, which is melted, hardened & pushed through a mold to form shapes.

The molds look like this:
Below is an action shot of the soap being pushed through the mold:
Here they are, waiting for their next task!

Once formed, the different shapes are combined, using liquid soap, to become pictures.

In the picture below, lilies are being combined to their stems & leaves, using liquid soap to become the Lily of the Valley soap.

After being combined, the molds look like this:
This will become Lilac soap.

During this process, more soap is being melted & scented to become the actual soap loaf. Once the finished molds are completed, they are added into the liquid, scented soap.

In the picture below, a tub is partly filled with liquid scented soap. The molds are added into it, and then more liquid soap is poured over it to complete the loaf.
One tub creates two loaves of soap.

Once dried & hardened , the soap is cut into two loaves, wrapped & sent to us.
Once they arrive, we open them, cut the loaves into bars. This is exactly how you see them in the store!

Primal Elements is a company out of Huntington Beach, CA.
It was created by a husband and a wife in 1993.
Although the company has grown & blossomed since 1993, they still hand-make the soap the same way they did in 1993!

You have to check it out!

Some Tips from the PJ Girls:
We recommend keeping the soap in a soap dish that drains to prolong the life of the soap and prevent melting.
The soaps can be used as hand soap, in the shower, as a face soap.

The Most Important Tip:
The soap smell so delicious that you may want to take a bite.
Do not take a bite of the soap.
It doesn't taste as good as it smells.
No matter how much your nose tries to convince you.

So come on in to the shop & take a sniff!

Put one in your shower!
Put one in your soap dish on the sink!
Wash your face with it!

Monsoon Season

This Afternoon, Flagstaff Experienced a
Wonderful & Refreshing
Storm!

After longing for rain for awhile now, our dreams finally came true.
Sprinkles lifted our spirits in the morning, but the real treat came around 2:30pm this afternoon, when it...
poured.
It was as if a lake was dropped onto this mountain down of ours.
It was quick, but it sure dumped!

Taylar couldn't help but to take a look at the flooding.
When a storm comes, there isn't much to do, right?
No:
Hiking
Biking
Sunbathing
Canoeing
So what is there to do on a day such as this?

Well the PJ Girls sure know what to do!
Have a Pamper Day!

How about a Pedicure?!
Draw some warm water in the tub
Drop in some Revitalizing Foot Soak
Soak those tired dogs of yours
Give them a good scrub using a Terracotta Foot Scrubber and scrub your feet & legs with some Peppermint Exfoliating Foot Scrub
Dry off with your favorite & softest towel.
Once dry, lather up your legs with some Cooling Leg Rub
Finally, top those feet off with some Foot Butter
